About this object
This photograph depicts the Bank of New Zealand on Heretaunga Street in Hastings after the Hawke's Bay earthquake on the 3rd of February 1931.

The bank was originally built at this site in 1884 but was destroyed twice by fire. The pictured brick and plaster building was built in 1907 in an ornate Renaissance style.

The building survived the earthquake but was badly damaged.

The building to the left of the bank has been demolished.

The photographer is thought to be Frank L Moodie, architect.
