The premises of the London Lancaster Fire Insurance Company are located immediately behind the hotel. The building is surrounded by scaffolding. The South British Insurance Company building is visible on the corner of Herschell Street and Browning Street. The Borough Council Chambers (built 1874) stand on the corner of Marine Parade and Herschell Street. Further along Marine Parade, the Napier Courthouse (designed by William Henry Clayton, completed 1875) is visible. On the opposite side of the street, Marine Parade is lined with young Norfolk Island Pines. Tree guards enclose each of the trees. The sea wall and the beach are visible on the right side of the image. Several men pose along the esplanade. Bluff Hill is visible in the distance.
