About this object
View of Marine Parade looking south towards Awatoto taken in the early 1930s. Marine Parade is lined with Norfolk Island Pines and park benches. The area between the beach and the parade has been grassed and the gardens planted. A children’s playground featuring swings, a merry-go-round, and a maypole is located in the foreground. The Hawke’s Bay Club (designed by Walter Phillip Finch, built 1906) and the Napier Courthouse (designed by William Henry Clayton, completed 1875) are visible on the extreme right of the image. The Borough Council Chambers (built 1874) and the Masonic Hotel (designed by Prouse & Wilson, completed 1932) is visible further down Marine Parade. A young man poses in the foreground with his dog.
