About this object
A photograph of the repair work being undertaken to damage on the Waitangi Bridge, Awatoto, Napier.

The photograph is taken from the rail line below the bridge level looking south east. The road in the distance stretches toward Clive. The bridge straddles the Tutaekuri River visible at the end of the rail line and flowing under the bridge.

There is a large construction item, possibly a hoist, on the right hand side of the bridge.

The image was captured in 1938 following a period of extensive flooding in April of that year. There was unprecedented damage to roads, bridges, fences, livestock and other property.

The Waitangi Bridge over the Tutaekuri River suffered serious damage. Four spans of the bridge subsided and the river bed was scoured out by the river to a depth of 40 feet (12.19 metres). The repairs to Waitangi Bridge cost £10,746.
