About this object
A photograph of Napier Central Fire Station taken after the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

The image illustrates the removal of debris for demolition of the old frontage of the building.

The Central Fire Station at 163 Tennyson Street was an original Louis Hay building which was reconditioned in 1932. At this time it was also moved further back on the site to allow for street widening.

A man in a waistcoat is standing on the roof. Another man in a hat is in the foreground of the image with his back to the camera. To his left there is a large ladder on top of the rubble. Corrugated iron frames the foreground at the bottom of the image.
