About this object
This photograph depicts the damaged Empire Hotel on Shakespeare Road, Napier, after the Hawke's Bay earthquake on the 3rd of February 1931.

The building has suffered extensive damage to the exterior walls, exposing the interior of the bedrooms. The front wall of the second and third levels has also collapsed.

Brewster Street is visible on the right side of the photograph.

The photographer is thought to be Frank L Moodie, architect.
