About this object
View of Marine Parade looking towards the Central Business District from the foreshore that is thought to have been taken around 1932. In the foreground is the skating rink, which features an art deco zig-zag design of inlaid concrete. In the centre of the photograph, the Masonic Hotel (designed by Prouse & Wilson, completed 1933) is under construction. In front of the hotel stands the South African War Memorial. To the left of the hotel is the entrance to Emerson Street. On the opposite side of the intersection is an empty site (later the site of the T & G Building, built 1935-36). Further down Emerson Street the Bank of New Zealand (designed by Crichton, McKay & Haughton, completed 1932) is under construction.

To the right of the Masonic Hotel is Tennyson Street. Buildings visible on this side of the photograph include the New Zealand Insurance Company building (designed by J A Louis Hay, completed 1932), the Borough Council Chambers (built 1874), and the Napier Courthouse (designed by William Henry Clayton, completed 1875).

On the right, Napier Hill is visible in the distance.
