About this object
View of Napier taken from the roof of the Masonic Hotel (completed 1933) looking towards Napier Hill around 1932. The roof of the hotel is covered with barrels and other building materials. On the opposite side of Tennyson Street stands the New Zealand Insurance building (designed by J A Louis Hay, completed 1932) and the Robert Holt Building (designed by R Holt & Sons, completed 1933). Workmen are visible on the roofs of both buildings. On the corner of Tennyson Street and Hastings Street, the Bryant’s Building (designed by Finch & Westerholm, completed 1933) is also under construction. The remains of St John’s Cathedral are visible to the left. Herschell Street is located on the right of the image. The side of the Borough Council Chambers (built 1874) is visible on the extreme right of the photograph.
