About this object
This photograph depicts the back of Dickens Street from an elevated view. It was taken after the Hawke's Bay earthquake on the 3rd of February 1931 and shows the devastation caused to central Napier by the quake and the fires that followed.
There are damaged and destroyed buildings in the foreground.
In the background of the image, the Napier Post Office can be seen on the corner of Hastings and Dickens Streets. The interior of the building was burnt out but the structure remained standing.
The building with the rounded roof in the centre of the photograph is thought to be Anderson & Hansen Limited, a motor garage.
The photographer is thought to be Frank L Moodie, architect.
