About this object
A photograph taken at the base of Bluff Hill in the late nineteenth century.

A great deal of limestone and debris is visible at the base of the hill. The base of the bluff had been blasted for the extension of the breakwater in the harbour, increasing the efficiency of the port.

A steam shovel and crane are visible in the right of the image. One can also see workers at the base with shovels. Some people are standing to the right in the image looking out in the direction of the breakwater and harbour.
