The photograph is a Burton Bros photo, taken by Alfred between April 1885 and July 1886 (It would be early summer of late 1885 as the deciduous trees are in full foliage. Burton Bros had an agency in Napier and Alfred took some 47 photos in Napier on at least 3 visits. https://collections.tepapa.govt.nz/object/17521 The South British was likely completed in 1884 on a section that had previously been a retail shop, show-room, workshop dwelling for Large & Townley. That building site was cleared in October 1883. Peter Frank Jacobsen and Otto Karl Peez first appear in the 1885-86 Napier Electoral roll. April 21st they advertised from the Masonic for roos central, and by the 23rd were advertising the South British as their address. On 1 July 1886 an advert advertised the dissolution of the partnership on account of Otto leaving for Europe, the business to continue under Jacobsen.
