About this object
View of Hastings Street looking south from Shakespeare Road thought to have been taken around 1898. R Hannah and Company (The Hawke’s Bay and Napier Cash Boot Market) is located on the corner of Hastings Street and Browning Street. Other businesses visible along the left side of Hastings Street include S E Cooper (watchmaker and jeweller), the Masonic Hotel, and H Williams (ironmonger). On the extreme right of the image stands the old Post office. Behind the Post Office is the Bank of New Zealand. Further along Hastings Street signs advertising the Ringland Brothers (hatters and hosiers), the Criterion Hotel and the Union Bank of Australia are visible. Horse drawn carriages run along Hastings Street.
