The photograph was taken from the pond before Waghorne Street turned to go past the Commercial and Crown hotels.
A shirtless man is leaning on a shovel with his back to the photographer in the mid ground. The timber is piled up in front of the buildings in the yard. The buildings are facing on to Waghorne Street on the Eastern Spit of Ahuriri.
Bluff Hill is visible in the background with several houses.
The photograph is taken prior to September 1879 when the Le Quesne timber interests were sold to Dolbel and Co.
