About this object
An image of the Commercial Hotel in Ahuriri taken in the 1860s or 1870s. The Commercial hotel stood on the corner of Waghorne Street and Custom Street, backing onto Nelson Quay.
Cattle are grazing In front of the hotel, which was a holding area for livestock being put on ships. Children stand in the foreground of the photograph.
To the right of the Commercial Hotel building is Sam Begg's where the Hawke's Bay Herald was first published.
Behind the hotel Battery Point is visible. A ship mast is also visible to the right behind the buildings, possibly moored at Nelson Quay.
