About this object
View of Hastings Street looking towards Napier Hill that is thought to have been taken in 1931 prior to the Hawke’s Bay earthquake. At the extreme left of the image stands the Criterion Hotel. Businesses visible along the right side of the street include D S L (Hawke’s Bay Direct Supply Association Ltd, drapers, mercers and house furnishers), the Bank of Australasia, A Hobson and Company (pharmacy), and Parkers and Company (tailors and outfitters). At the centre of the photograph stands the Clarendon Hotel. A tram, cars and a coach travelling between the Post Office and Hospital Hill runs along Hastings Street.
