About this object
This photograph shows the destruction caused to the Masonic Hotel, located on Marine Parade, by the 3 February 1931 earthquake and subsequent fire. On the back of the photograph is written: searching for dead bodies, Masonic Hotel, Napier.
Naval officers, probably from the HMS Veronica, along with other men search the rubble of the hotel for survivors.
The Murray and Roberts Co Ltd building can be seen in the background. It was located at the corner of Emerson Street and Marine Parade.
