About this object
View of Hastings Street looking towards Napier Hill thought to have been taken in the 1920s or early 1930s. On the extreme left of the image stands the Criterion Hotel, which was located on the corner of Hastings Street and Emerson Street. In the distance, the Clarendon Hotel and the Roope Brooking building are visible along Shakespeare Road. Signs advertising Fargher and Company (outfitters), Parkers and Company (tailors and outfitters), a hairdresser (possibly H E Mercer), a chemist, and D S L (Hawke’s Bay Direct Supply Association Ltd, drapers, mercers and house furnishers) are also visible along Hastings Street. Tram lines run down the centre of the street. The street is occupied by cars and pedestrians.
