About this object
View of Hastings Street looking south from Shakespeare Road that is thought to have been taken in September 1913. In the centre of the image, a large group of people crowd around a tram. The tramway service, which ran between Napier and Port Ahuriri, was inaugurated on 8 September 1913.

On the extreme right of the image stands the old Post office, which is located on the corner of Hastings Street and Browning Street. Behind the Post Office is the Bank of New Zealand. Further along Hastings Street signs advertising the Kia Ora Luncheon and Tea Rooms, The Universal Providers, Ringland Brothers (tailors and mercers), and W J Tabuteau (Sharebroker, Land and Insurance Agent) are visible. The premises of Hannahs and Company (boot providers) can be seen on the left.
