About this object
View of Hastings Street looking south taken in the vicinity of Emerson Street in the late nineteenth century. Businesses visible along the left side of the street include Garrett Brothers Boot Shoe Depot (located in Dublin House), the New Zealand Insurance Company, P F Colledge (watchmaker and jeweller), H Williams (ironmonger), R T Smythe (bookseller and stationer), John Higgins (butcher), Fortune and Black (bakers and confectioners) and C Hitchman (lolly manufacturer). On the opposite side of the street signs advertise R H Holder (saddler), and David Palmer and Company. Horse drawn carts and carriages can be seen along the street.
