About this object
View of Emerson Street looking away from Marine Parade that is thought to have been taken in 1910. On the left of the photograph stands the department store Kirkcaldie and Stains. Kirkcaldie and Stains occupied this building between 1897 and 1917.
Opposite Kirkcaldie and Stains stand Palmer's Stables and the National Bank of New Zealand. Beyond, Hasting Street runs across the photograph. On the opposite side of the intersection can be seen the Union Bank of Australia on the left and the Criterion Hotel on the right. Behind the Union Bank of Australia are the premises of draper and importer, J P Thomson, built 1898. At the time that the photograph was taken, work was being undertaken on the façade of this building.
Further down Emerson Street can be seen the premises of Blythe and Company (drapers and clothiers) and Ross & Glendining Limited (warehousemen and manufactures).
The street is occupied by pedestrians.
