About this object
Non-commissioned Hawke's Bay Military Settlers posed for a photograph in two lines, the front line is kneeling with bayonets drawn and the back row is standing with bayonets drawn. A man at the right of the photograph stands looking toward the camera. He is an officer and is most likely armed with a sword suspended on his left side by two long belt loops. There are hills in the background and a small building to the left behind the armed men.

Photograph attributed to Swan and Wrigglesworth photographers who were based both in Wellington and Napier.

Caption states that "A man at the right of the photograph stands looking toward the camera unarmed". The man at the right is an officer and is almost certainly armed with a Sword. The sword is suspended on his left side by two long belt loops. The sword could be hooked tight against the hip, or worn loose. In this case it is worn loose, held almost horizontally under his left arm, the hilt hidden from view and the reinforced all steel scabbard facing forward.
