About this object
View of the corner of Dalton Street and Emerson Street, Napier, thought to have been taken around 1933. Looking across the intersection, Emerson street runs across the photograph from left to right.

At the centre of the photograph stands the Hotel Central which was built in 1932. To the right of this building is Mid City Plaza, built 1920-25. At the extreme left of the photograph stands the E & D Building, built in 1929. All three of these buildings were designed by the local architect E A Williams.

On the opposite side of Emerson Street stands the Napier Building. Designed in the stripped classical style by the architectural firm Finch & Westerholm, this building was erected in 1933. A sign on the façade of the building advertises snooker, billiards and pool.

Behind the Hotel Central can be seen the CB Hansen Building on Dalton Street. Designed in the art deco style by Finch & Westerholm, this building was erected in 1933.
