About this object
View of the intersection of Emerson Street and Hastings Street thought to have been taken in 1907. Taken looking down Emerson Street facing away from Marine Parade, the Union Bank of Australia stands on the far left hand corner of the intersection. Behind the Union Bank of Australia can be seen the premises of draper and importer, J P Thomson, built in 1898. Opposite stands the Criterion Hotel, which opened on this site in March 1874. Immediately adjacent to the camera is the verandah of the premises occupied by the department store Kirkcaldie and Stains between 1897 and 1917. A sign advertising the premises of doctor and dentist H W Frost can be seen further along Emerson Street. None of the buildings visible in this photograph survived the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.
