Military buildings and barracks are visible in the background. The photograph was taken sometime during the New Zealand Wars and may show the Eighteenth Royal Irish Regiment.

Very interesting image showing a squadron of British soldiers performing bayonet exercises, specifically, "Guards and Points by numbers" They are not advancing, as the caption suggests, but are standing at the "Guard" position.
