About this object
An image of a militia encampment on the Waikato or Waipa River at Ngaruawahia. The photograph was captured during the New Zealand Wars in December 1863.
The image was taken from the opposite river bank to the settlement. Permanent buildings and wharenui are visible alongside the tents. A large pole with a flag, probably the Union Jack, is visible to the right of the settlement. Hills and plains are visible in the distance.
Photograph attributed to Dr William Isaac Spencer.
