About this object
This image is taken from Bluff Hill, looking down on Napier Central Business District after the 1931 Hawkes Bay earthquake.
In the foreground is the damaged Municipal Theatre, which has an open ceiling and diagonally across from this is the Public Trust building.
Running through the central part of the image is Emerson Street and crossing this from Public Trust building and along to the right is Dalton Street.
Buildings along Dalton street include: Dalgety's, Humphries Cash Grocery Store. These two buildings sit on the corners where Dickens and Dalton streets meet.
Other buildings in this area included HB Motor Company and HB Farmers Co-operative Association, both listed in the 1931 Napier Directory as being on Dickens Street.
At the top of Dickens street, in the left hand corner of the image is Sargood, Son and Ewen and next to this is Paxies Bros which survived the earthquake and was built in the Spanish Mission style before 1931.
The building in the top left corner was the Caledonian Hotel on Hastings Street.
Also noted as being in the photograph is the E & D Building on the corner of Emerson and Dalton Streets. On the card it is written that Colombus Radio is one of the shops and that the building next to this is Cox's which got burnt but is still there.
