The map is a copy of the original map compiled and drawn by J D H Buchanan in March 1948. This detailed map includes place names, roads, rivers, streams and the location of pā, cultivations, eel-weirs, Kainga settlements, canoe landings and burial grounds. Māori land blocks are also marked on the map: Ōmāhu, Heretaunga, Te Awa A Te Atua, Ngatarawa Number 4, Ngatarawa Number 2, Ngatarawa Number 1 and Ohiti-Waitio. A key and reference sources are listed at the bottom of the map.

The notes on place names were compiled from Captain W Blake's minutes of the Ōmāhu case heard before Judge O'Brien of the Native Land Court in Hastings, 1889-90. Place names are listed in alphabetical order.

All documents are grouped in a folder entitled Ohiti-Ōmāhu District. A second label reads: Royal Society of New Zealand, Hawke's Bay Branch, Hastings Historical Section.
