The file contains handwritten and typed letters and copies of letters regarding requests for financial assistance for damage repairs; estimates or invoices from contracted tradesmen; newspaper forms and inspection reports following an earthquake in May 1932. Annotated pages regarding the applications have been inserted between some of the documents.
The newspaper forms are titled: Earthquake Damage, and request owners or tenants in Taradale to fill in the form listing their name, address, number of chimneys down, estimated cost to repair same, other damage, cost to replace same, and cost of total loss and return them to the editor of the Taradale and Greenmeadows Observer in order to ascertain a rough estimate of damage in Taradale caused by an earthquake on 5 May 1932.
