Brief Description
Assorted documents including lists, letters, permits, memoranda and telegrams in a folder numbered 15 and titled: Evacuations. The lists included the details of those evacuated by car, rail and sea.

Carbon copy lists of evacuees from Nelson Park in Napier with a cover page. The lists include the name of the evacuee, their home address and their destination. Some home addresses are not listed. Some lists have names and numbers of persons travelling. The lists include those transported by car and rail and includes auxiliary lists for 5, 6 and 7 February 1931. Dates of travel listed are Thursday 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 February 1931. Included is a list of persons travelling to Gisborne by SS Pakura on 5 February 1931. Also included is:

A carbon copy of a letter dated 18 February 1931 from the evacuation office at Nelson Park. The letter is to the Chairman of the Executive of the Napier Associated Relief, Mr Morse. The letter details the current situation and numbers of evacuations and permits. The author also expresses his appreciation to his colleagues, Mr J R Jones of Gisborne, Mr G Canning of Napier and Mr M Guthrie of Palmerston North. The letter is signed by the captain of evacuations, surname Phillips. The letter has an annotation at the bottom regarding an upcoming meeting.

A carbon copy of a letter dated 9 March to the manager of the Union Steamship company in Napier with a request for tickets from Wellington to Christchurch for Doctor and Mrs Barnett and child. The charge is to be made to the Napier Relief Committee.

The memorandum lists the current situation in Wellington with recommendations for people in Wellington defined as strays; men wanting work and repatriation issues. It also reports on the current distribution and concentration of refugees in sub-centres in Waipawa, Waipukurau, Dannevirke and the position at the showgrounds in Palmerston North. The memorandum is dated 12 February 1931 and was produced by E M Finlayson.

A carbon copy of an authorisation for travel to Wellington for Mr J S Carmichael and his three sons. The authorisation is dated 17 February.

A carbon copy memorandum dated 11 February 1931 titled: Regarding Report to General Committee. The memorandum is regarding travel information about Captain Finlayson and a report to be forwarded. The author writes of attached information from Palmerston. The memorandum was produced by R Foville on behalf of E W Finlayson [sic] of the evacuation tent at Nelson Park. No information is attached to the memorandum.

A typed copy and carbon copy of a wire received at 12 noon on Wednesday 11 February and a handwritten copy of the same. The telegram is from the Mayor, named as Graham, and states that Palmerston North is now only a clearing station for other towns and that assistance will be given in transferring refugees elsewhere.

A copy of a telegram dated 11 February 1931, on a New Zealand Post Office Telegraphs form. The message is from Greene to Cunningham in Wellington and is regarding refugees at Waipukurau.

A copy of a telegram dated 10 February 1931, on a New Zealand Post Office Telegraphs form. The message is from the Mayor, Vigor Brown, to Thayer in Gore and states that there is nothing to prevent a return to Napier. A handwritten annotation indicates the telegram was reply paid.

A copy of a typed permit granted to Mrs Dr Fitzgerald for return travel from Napier. The permit is dated 13 February 1931.

A typed permit granted to H Markham and Frank Jaeger for return travel from Napier. The permit is dated 13 February 1931. Attached to the typed permit is a handwritten permit and a carbon copy of a permit on Public Works requisition forms for H Markham and Frank Jaeger for return travel from Napier to Wellington. One form is signed by F G Smith, the other by B B Creagh. Both are dated 13 February 1931.

An urgent reply paid telegram sent from Tokomaru Bay to the Mayor of Napier. The Napier postmark is dated 13 February 1931. The message is a request for permits for six children and one adult travelling to Marton by car. A reply from Morse is typed at the bottom of the telegram. Attached to the telegram is a letter dated 13 February to Captain Finlayson at Nelson Park. The letter requests Captain Finlayson to attend to the application for permits and quotes the telegram and the reply at the bottom of the letter.

A carbon copy of a permit for Mr D W Allen for return travel to Napier on business. The permit is date 14 February.

A carbon copy of a letter dated 9 February 1931 to Captain Finlayson from the deputy chairman of the Napier Citizen's Earthquake Control committee requesting permission for Mrs Wells and two small children to depart by train the next day. The author writes that previous arrangements made for departure to Hamilton are no longer able to be implemented.

The letter is to the chairman of the Relief committee and is regarding an enclosed list of refugees billeted in Waipukurau. A postscript on the letter is regarding able bodied men available to return to Napier if required. No list is with the letter. The signature on the letter is indecipherable.

A letter dated 14 February to the mayor of Waipukurau acknowledging his letter and thanking him for the list of refugees billeted in Waipukurau. The mayor's offer of able-bodied men is accepted.

A letter from the Putaruru Town Board dated 24 February 1931. The letter is addressed to the Mayor of the Napier Borough Council and is an offer of accommodation for refugees. The letter has an annotation and is signed on behalf of the clerk of the Putaruru Town Board.

A letter to the Town Clerk in Putaruru dated 28 February 1931 thanking him for the offer to billet refugees and advising him that the situation has eased and that residents are now returning to their homes.

A copy of a letter dated 20 February to the Station Master in Napier, with a request that a ticket to Pahiatua be issued to Mr R P Anderson and that it be marked on the Napier Relief committee order.

A memorandum for the officer in charge of the Labour Bureau in Napier. The memorandum is regarding permits for three unemployed, non-resident men wishing to return home. The names listed are C A Nunn, Joseph Scarlett and J C Johnston. Usual cities or towns of residence are Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton.

A handwritten letter dated 21 February 1931 from the Chief Postmaster to the Transport Officer at Nelson Park, Napier. The letter gives permission for Mr E L Wallis to leave Napier. The duration and purpose of the leave is listed. The letter has a Napier telegraph office stamp dated 21 February 1931 and an annotation granting the permit.

A memorandum dated 21 February 1931 from the Manager of Dalgety and Company Limited in Napier to the Permit Officer in Napier. The author requests a permit be granted for return travel from Napier to Palmerston North.

A copy of a letter dated 20 February, to the Station Master in Napier. The letter refers to the free evacuation of Napier residents and their furniture as arranged by Mr Sterling. The authors advises that Mr H L Davis of Chambers Street wishes to ship his goods and chattels to Wellington and the author requests railway facility assistance.

A message on a business card of the Mayor of Wellington, Mr G A Troup, dated 16 February 1931. The message is to Mr Morse and is a request for permission for H L Davis and F J Burton to transfer their furniture to Wellington for settlement purposes.

A two page handwritten letter dated 20 February 1931 from H L Davis at the Nelson Park refugee camp to the Chairman of the Relief Committee, Mr Morse. The letter is on Salvation Army Marquee letterhead and is a request for financial assistance to enable Mr Davis to move his furniture to Wellington. Mr Davis describes his situation and that of his wife and children in Wellington. An annotation on the back of the letter signed by W Harvey requests an investigation into the application. A second annotation indicates permission was granted.

A memorandum dated 18 February 1931 on a New Zealand Post Office Telegraphs form to General Young at Defence in Wellington. The message is from Butcher and is regarding a visit from Reverend Wilson from New Plymouth and an offer to billet refugees in Taranaki.

A memorandum dated 18 February stating that Mr V H Ross is the officer in charge of Red Cross activities in Napier. The memorandum has the handwritten initials, W E B.

Thirty-nine pages listing the names, numbers of children and addresses of evacuees. Some also list the date, destination or mode of transport. The lists are written in pencil or are carbon copies. One page has the heading: List of Evacuations Nelson Park. Several pages have writing or diagrams on the reverse side, are on index pages or have printed numbers.

A carbon copy list dated 13 February 1931, glued to a blank sheet of paper. The list is to the Central Committee from Captain E M Finlayson and is the daily totals of evacuations from Nelson Park, Napier between 4 to 10 February.

A handwritten message regarding the evacuation of the secretary, children and staff from the Hawke's Bay Childrens' Home to Auckland. The message is dated 5 February 1931 and is signed by H E Edgley, secretary of the Hawke's Bay Children's Home.
