Brief Description
Assorted documents in a folder numbered 14 and titled: Expressions of Sympathy. The documents include letters, telegrams and carbon copies of return thank you memos on New Zealand Post telegraph forms.

A two page letter from the New Zealand Branch of the British Red Cross Society in Wellington to Mr Morse, Chairman of the Citizens Relief Committee. The letter is dated 24 February 1931 and is signed by the Secretary of the Red Cross Society. In the letter the Secretary expresses gratitude for the courtesy and co-operation afforded by the committee to the Society. The author describes the purpose of the assistance from the Society in co-operating with the Relief Committee and expresses gratitude at being able to assist. The author also describes the assistance given to refugees.

A typed letter dated 7 February 1931 from the chairman of the Earthquake Relief Committee to the Governor General, Lord Bledisloe, expressing appreciation for his and his wife's visit and offering thanks for the assistance given by relief committees, medical staff and community organisations throughout New Zealand. The author offers an apology for not meeting Lord Bledisloe on his arrival due to the need for rest before resuming duties and requests a meeting at a time of the Governor General's convenience.

A carbon copy of a letter to the Chairman of the Earthquake Relief Committee in Wairoa from the Chairman of the Napier Citizens' Control Committee. The letter is dated 4 March and expresses sympathy for the losses sustained in Wairoa in the earthquake and offers assistance where required.

A two page handwritten letter to Mr Morse from L Stevens also known as Mrs W H Stevens, from Rangiora. The letter is dated 27 February 1931 and is a request for information regarding George Bennett, a person killed in the earthquake.

A carbon copy of a letter to Mrs W H Stevens in Rangiora. The letter is dated 2 March and acknowledges receipt of a letter from Mrs Stevens. It confirms the name of a person killed in the earthquake as George F Dennett not Bennett.

A personal letter dated 12 February 1931 from the Charles Haines Advertising Agency Limited in Wellington to Mr C O Morse, chairman of the Earthquake Control Committee, complimenting the committee on the work done by them following the earthquake. The author writes of hearing about the catastrophe from friends he has seen from Napier and sends words of encouragement. The letter is signed by the Managing Director of the company, Will Appleton.

An incomplete handwritten telegram sent from Wellington to the Mayor of Napier expressing shock at the loss of life and damage following the earthquake.

A handwritten telegram to W E Barnard from Ogilvie, the Chairman of the Grey County Council in Greymouth. The author expresses sympathy from the council and residents of the county to the relatives of those killed in the earthquake. Attached to the telegram is a carbon copy to Ogilvie from Morse thanking him for the county's expression of sympathy.

A carbon copy of a telegraph message to Doris Fillery at the hospital in Dannevirke from C O Morse expressing good wishes for a speedy recovery to all nurses and outpatients.

Carbon copies of memos dated 9 and 10 February 1931 on New Zealand Post Office Telegraphs forms. The memos are from the Mayor, Vigor Brown, and are offering thanks for expressions of sympathy from the following:
