On the left can be seen Gorman's hotel and H Jacobs a hairdresser. On the right is the Clarendon hotel which is at the end of the street as it turns into Shakespeare Road.

On the right is Sidey & Bain's hardware house, the Bank of New Zealand and Neal and Close.

There are horses drawing carts and carriages on the sides of the road. J R Redstone & Co's passenger carriage is on the right and behind that is S Chappell's cart.

Napier Hill acts as a back drop to the photograph. Various houses can be seen.
