Russell Duncan has written under the photograph: Opepe Military Station. Photograph taken 1868/70. Note Tussock grass covered the country in those days. Large building in right background was a general store kept by Mr P de Lanney (Launey).

The photograph shows the Napier-Taupo Road running in front of the Opepe village. A palisade can be seen close to some of the buildings.
