Object detail

Brief Description
Memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake by Phyllis Fraser, nee Jessep.

Phyllis writes that she lived at White Pines in Tongoia [sic]. She writes there were five children; Eileen, Fred, Phyllis, Percy and Joyce, and their parents Rita and Percy. Her father was shearing at the time and the roof fell down on him and the sheep. Her mother was on a hill and was climbing through a fence to return home, when a rock came down and caught her on her leg and part of her back. Phyllis writes that if it had not been for the fence post, her mother may have been killed. The children were at Kaiwaka School and the teacher comforted the children by making them sing. They were on a hill and could see the Napier Hill burning. Phyllis writes that it is not a very humorous tale. She has signed as Phyl Fraser.
