Brief Description
A typed letter by Jack Rattray, recalling his memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.
Jack writes that he was five years old, and it was his first day at Mahora School, in Hastings. He had been staying with his nanna in Tomoana, as his mother was in hospital with a new baby. He remembers being outside on the tar-sealed playground, and the next minute standing in water up to his knees from the overflowing swimming pool. An older pupil took him home to his nanna's and he remembers that all the chimneys had fallen down. His father was working in Wellington, but came home to check on the family. They slept in tents on the front lawn and cooked outside until the kitchen chimney was rebuilt.
