Brief Description
A letter written by Jean Hall, nee McMillan, recalling her memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.
Jean writes that she had gone to Greenmeadows from Hastings the day before the earthquake. When it struck, she thought the end of the world had come. She writes of what a marvellous job the vessels Diamede; Dunedin and Veronica did in rescuing people. She also recalls the old Napier racecourse being full of tents and the survivors and injured being cared for there.
Jean describes the following day when she was taken in someone's car to view the damage and, having grown up in Napier, how she felt seeing all the devastation. She goes on to say how the earthquake continued to affect her when she later lived in Lower Hutt.
