Brief Description
A letter written on 28 May 2001 by Mrs S Bathgate-Hunt to Miss K Rowe at Poukawa School, recalling memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.
The author remembers being with two siblings, trying to cool down in the bath on a hot summer's day, when the earthquake struck. The author's father was a medical practitioner and that dozens of people came to their home to be treated. She remembers people with blood streaming from their wounds. After driving his family to Auckland to stay with relatives, her father came back to work in the theatre at the Memorial Hospital before returning six weeks later to bring them home. While in Auckland the author attended St Cuthbert's School and was listed in the register as a refugee from Hawke's Bay.
