Brief Description
A letter from Sonia Heesterman relating the story of her mother, Doris Henbest nee Hullett, at the time of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. Doris worked at Lushers grocery store and narrowly avoided injury when the grocery shop wall collapsed. Survivors pulled her out over the bricks just as the shop caught fire.
Doris's father, Alan Hullett, had a car upholstery business in Russell Street, Hastings, and pulled a baby out of its pram to avoid falling bricks. Sonia believes the baby was one of twins, and that the other baby did not survive. Alan's business premises were completely destroyed.
Sonia has her mother's earthquake photographs in her possession.
