Brief Description
A map of Hawke's Bay showing the route of Colenso's first journey to the Ruahine Ranges in 1845. The journey started from Colenso's Mission at Waitangi. On the first day he travelled over the Ngaruroro River and Ahuriri Plains, around Poukawa Lake, stopping at Roto-a-Tara for the night. Days two and three saw him venture on to camp at the edge of the Waipawa River. On day four he travelled north-west, stopping upstream of the Waipawa River, where he made camp for the night. On days five and six Colenso made it to Te Āhua Māhuri, 5,028 feet above sea level. An advance party then travelled a further two miles towards the Rangitikei River, before the group returned to Colenso's Mission. Various positions of Māori tracks are noted in the area. Morris’s whaling station can be seen north of the Esk River at Awapawanui.
