Brief Description
Map of trenches in France during World War I dated June 1917, marked and annotated by FA Bailey.
Map shows the area around St Emile, Lens, Mericourt, Harnes and Henin Lietard.The map shows contour lines, towns, railway lines, roads, the La Souchez River flowing through Lens and Harnes, enemy trenches, British trenches, wire entanglements, supply dumps, trench mortar and mine craters.
The map is divided into large rectangles lettered M to U and are sub-divided into squares of 1,000 yards.
The Drocourt trench, which was the northern most section of the Hindenburg line runs between Drocourt and Queant and the Montigny trench runs from Billy - Montigny to Montigny. Both of these trenches are fronted by wire entanglements.
A glossary of terms is included on the reverse.
Scale is 1 to 200 000. Sheet 36c SW.
