Brief Description
First person recollection of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake by Llewellyn Mitchell des Landes.

Lew was working in the workshop of the Gas Meter Repair Staff of the Napier Gas Company Limited at the time. He describes in detail his immediate impressions and actions after the earthquake. He names people he met on his way home and during his search with his father for his brother who also survived. Names mentioned include his boss Ernest Elliot Anderson, Mr Craig, Miss Armour, Miss Hodge, Des Emile Morgan, Cec Williams, J R H Thorp (Little Jim), Tom Atkinson (who was killed), Harry Hill, Cecil and Ron Rowe, Rose Levy and Valayo des Landes (the author's sister). The author also names his co-workers at the time who were: Mathew Alexander John O'Brien, Charles Herbert Bickerstaff, Noel Freeman Bickerstaff, George Bull (an uncle by marriage), Percy Wilfred Exeter, Alan Douglas, Robertson, Jimmy Powers, George Stephen Williams, William John Geddis, Ted Lanning, Wally Hatfull (possibly Hatwell).
