The photograph shows the rebuilding of Napier businesses after the devastating 3 February 1931 earthquake and subsequent fire. The image, taken looking towards the corner of Hastings and Tennyson streets, shows the foundations of the Masonic Hotel block. Across the road is the new Market Reserve building.
