Brief Description
Descriptive map of Lake Taupo.
The map covers Lake Roto Aira, Waihora Bay, Waitahanui and Whangamata Road area.
Surrounding Lake Taupo are descriptions of Māori legends and past history of the areas:
Reverend J S Chapman, in 1839, built with raupo reeds the first Mission church at Ngamokai Pā. Bishop Selwyn preached here in 1843 near a cave, by some old karaka trees. The seed of these old trees was said to have been brought from Waikare in Hawke's Bay by Tamamutu in one of his raids at the end of the 17 century.
Around the Whareroa Stream, in 1820, 1822 and the end of 1826 to 1828, saw strong Ngati - Tuwharetoa war parties leave to raid the Ngati - Kahungunga of Hawke's Bay, usually led by Mananui.
