Object detail

Brief Description
Letter to the Be Our Guest competition from M G Hantler about his memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

M G Hantler and his sister were students at Havelock North School in 1931. They were at the swimming baths when the earthquake struck. The brick archway and frontage was flattened just after the last person had entered the baths. No one was injured. At home on his family orchard, his mother and two younger brothers narrowly escaped injury when chimney bricks fell into the kitchen. As his mother tried to exit the house the steps of the verandah parted and she had to leap onto the lawn. His father fell from a tall ladder in the orchard but was safe and found the rest of the family on the lawn.
