Letter to the Be Our Guest competition from Desiree Lawrence about her memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.
Desiree was five years old and beginning her first day at Nelson Park School when the earthquake struck. She began to run home and met her mother along the way. They stayed that night on the verandah of her grandfather Frank Rice's house. Frank was a Napier City Councillor who had a confectionery business in Emerson Street, which having just been completed, was destroyed in the earthquake.
