About this object
The photograph, taken from Napier Hill, shows the damage to the central business area after the devastating 3 February 1931 earthquake and subsequent fire. Part of the Athenaeum can be seen on the left hand side of the image. Smoke is issuing from one of the buildings. The streets have been cleared of debris to allow vehicle and public access.
