On the reverse of the map there is a description of the trip as well as narratives of the Tarawera Eruption and the Opepe Massacre. On the front is recorded numerous points of interest on the Napier Taupo Road such as the Blockhouse - the site of the former armed constabulary base just before Te Haroto and the old Auau situated just before Tarawera.
At the lower left hand corner can be seen an altitude diagram of the Napier Taupo Road, showing that the Turangakuma mountain is approx 2500 feet above sea level.
