The photograph shows Hastings Street after the 3 February 1931 earthquake and subsequent fire.
Sailors, probably from HMS Veronica, are searching for survivors. Flames and smoke are still visible amongst the ruins. The exterior walls are all that remains of the buildings. In the foreground is a crushed car.
