The photograph shows Hastings Street, Napier after the devastating 3 February 1931 earthquake and subsequent fire. The Clarendon Hotel, which is located on Shakespeare Road, can be seen in the middle distance. Some of the buildings are smouldering from the intense fire. There are houses on the hill behind Shakespeare Road. People can be seen picking their way through the debris.
