About this object
The photograph has been taken from Napier hill looking down into the business centre of the town. It shows Napier after the 3 February 1931 earthquake and subsequent fire. All that remains of many of the buildings are the exterior walls. Much of the debris has been cleaned up. Temporary buildings have been erected. The newly built long thin building on the left is located on the site of the Masonic Hotel and is called the Masonic Bar. The Criterion Bar is the other temporary building. The South African War Memorial is still standing on Marine Parade, minus the soldier.
