About this object
The photograph shows Hastings Street, Napier after the devastating 3 February 1931 earthquake and subsequent fire. The Bank of New Zealand, on the corner of Hastings Street and Emerson Street, is on fire and the flames are encroaching up Hastings Street towards Shakespeare Road. A fire hose can be seen crossing the street. The tram lines are down and the smoke from the flames is making visibility almost impossible.
